I have been planning on adding new tanks to my fish room but the store I was going to buy the 75g tanks from is not going to be doing the $1 per gallon any more(they included the 75g in that sale). With that information I'm going to have to rethink my fish room. I can get 40g breeders and 55g tanks at the $1 per gallon so those are my next choices.
Here is my thoughts.
55 Gallon
Pro
More water
4 feet long
Cons
Tanks are narrow only 12" wide
40g Breeder
Pro
more surface area than the 55g
lots of room for fish to turn around
Con
not as deep as the 55g
not large enough for most of the South American cichild
I currently have
Convicts which will do fine in both tanks
Firemouths which will do find in both tanks
Angels will do better in the 55g.
Blood Parrots better in 55g but if I keep them alone could be okay in a 40g
Green terror might do okay singly in a 55g but I might pick you a 125 for the pair
I would like to get some other fish but nothing I'm looking at gets over 10". That does limit my SA choices I know but it's what I like. I will be breeding the convicts, firemouths and maybe a few other CA cichilds in the coming years. I'm leaning toward the 55g because I think it gives me more options in the long run but I don't like the 12" part that is pretty limiting. But with these being mostly grow out and holding tanks it shouldn't be too big of a issue. I'm planning on adding three 125g tanks for the larger fish as they grow just need to find a good deal.
What am I missing here?
