ok, so there is a local bar by my home with a fishtank suspended over the pool table. It's been there since the early 90's. The tank itself is a 55 Gallon. It's inhabitants are dwindling, but one constant is a big irredescent shark that has been there since inception. I feel bad for it, as it has outgrown the tank. It is like the mascot of the bar. Over the years there have been many different fish none of which seem to last too long. So, yesterday I pop in there to watch ther Jets game. It was my first time there in 6 months or so. I walked past the tank to find not only the big shark, but also a pike in htere with him. The fish was about 8-10" and reddish in color. One eye was glazed over. It looked like he was a little banged up from whatever he/she was kept with in the past.

In any event, I took a couple of pics from my Iphone and will upload them later when i get home. Im hoping I can get an ID here on the fish, and ultimately if I can trade the bar owner for a few of my Dempseys...<--Which just seem to multiply on an alarming basis!

Pretty sure it's lugubris group - possibly johanna, probably male. Take him Home!
Showing some stress patterns but looks in decent shape. Get some better photos!

I understand Chrenicichla - A Bar Centerpiece over the Pool Table

Aye, twas thinking johanna as well, gorgeous coloration too! Definitely get that bad boy home and get it settled in all nice and comfy. I'm sure the colors will pop for you then!

Awesome on rescuing it! Thats what I'm talkin about!

Thanks for the ID's all...Very excited about this one. Although, I have to clear out some room now. Got a question for the sharpies here.

I have a pair of Venezuelan's. They are inseperable. The Johanna is coming in on Saturday. Giving the bar a pair of Dempseys even though the owner said he would just give me the fish. I am going to say that fish is between 8-10". Now...my Venezuelan's are in the 5-6" range. Do you think the trio will get along? My guess is with the size and all, the Johanna will take dominance over them, but...To what extent I guess is the majic question. I have a feeling I will be making room for a new tank in the future.

Also got some info on the fish itself. Owner of the bar bought it at a an LFS. Literally within a block or so. They guy that brought it in there kept the fish in a heated koi pond!!! This guy went from the taj mahal into a display tank in a local dive bar...It's like going from Park avenue into the projects! In any event, I can't wait to get him out of there.

I think you are going to have a battle on your hands. Lots of hiding spots might help. What size tank are the 3 going to be in?

I have an Oceanic 110. It's the bullet design. Lots of hiding places. Two sunken ships, plus 2 other decorative caves. I also have the egg crates which I used when breeding the Dempseys. I think I will do that to start as the new arrival I think is already streesed out.

I do have other tanks two 46g but they are used for breeding and currently have fry in them. GJD/BGJD. The mom in with the fry.

Well, it appears that the johanna (if thats what it is) is quite a bit larger than the venz, so its most likely going to be the tar out of them. So expect some hostility.

If they were close to the same size, and introduced at the same time you might have better chances. Being that the venz are already established though makes things tricky. Let us know how it goes though! Have those egg crates handy. Make sure they are SECURE too. You'd be surprised by how easily an determined Crenicichla can knock them over and get around them. :(

My Johanna rescue was over before it truly got started. Got a text from the owner of the bar today that the fish didn't make it. I should have taken it out during the week rather than waiting for Saturday. Was a real nice looking fish even though it was ill.
