Chromides

Does anyone keep chromides? I have a green chromide in my 75 that I got for free because he got his caudal fin ripped up in shipment. He is in brackish condition and eats crickets, waxworms, brine shrimp, bloodworms, krill, and Hikari Gold Cichlid pellets. Is there anything else I should know about him?

I'm a big fan of all three species of Etroplus, but don't currently have any. I used to have a pair of green chromides in a brackish tank at 1.009 SG. They actually laid eggs for me once, but tankmates ate all of them.

I have one of the smaller species that are much more peaceful towards each other and to tankmates. Unfortunately, they're seldom offered for sale and can be expensive. They're called Etroplus canarensis:

Mine were in the 8-10 inch range. Max size for E. suratensis depends on environment. Those that are found in FW environments are usually much smaller than the BW and SW ones--I read that before, but I can't remember where. 40 cm or 16 inches is what's listed in fishbase.org for E. suratensis.

I got mine for free. He came into the LFS store in their saltwater shipment with a messed up caudal fin. I even offered to buy him but they said I could have him.

Radley, the genus Etroplus has two readily available species (E. suratensis/green chromide and E. maculatus/orange chromide) and one very rare species (E. canarensis). The first two species are usually quite inexpensive. E. canarensis is usually quite expensive.

Yea, I'm not sure which one I have. All of these pictures show fish with bars. My chromide doesnt have bars.
