Hello,
I am a new member to this site, and I am looking for some pointers regarding one of my cloudy tanks. It is a 55g tank with a 11" JD, 2 6" peacocks, a 4" Jag and a 6" Jag. This tank has been running about a year, and used to be clear, but for the last several months has been a cloudy whitish pale yellowish color. I have been keeping up with water changes once a week to once every two weeks, and doing 20-30% of the water. I have been adding the dechlorinator to the bucket of water before adding the water to the tank. I am wondering if my tank is overstocked? I asked a friend at the LFS, and he said that my stocking was fine. I've bought the "Nutra Cycle" to see if that would help the bacteria balance, and it has done nothing. What else could the cloudiness be? Thanks for any help!

I would say your overstocked and you filters can't keep up with the waste your fish are producing and causing an ammonia spike. You have a lot of big fish in a small tank. What are your water parameters?

It could be an alge bloom, your gonna have to do more frequent WC and possibly leave your light off more. I'd do more than 20-30%.. Start out like tonight, with a 50-60% WC and keep up with it, your tank should be well established that you can do bigger WC if needed.. like every 3-4 days.. I'm just speaking from my experience..

Overstocked isn't the word for that tank!!

You have WAY to many fish for that tank and in my eyes you're being down right negligent with your water changes too.

You need to do %50 twice a week get more filtration. For that many fish you'll need the equivalent of an FX5 imo. The reason your water is cloudy is because you've got fishes that produce more amonia than the filters can actively break down..

More water changes, bigger filters and loose some fish too...

Remember that this is just my opinion on things. However it is an informed opinion as I've been keeping fish for a hell of a long time..

This is just my view on things

Actually have you thought about the fact that not 1 of your fish can live it's full life in that tank comfortably?

What are your test reading too?

Thank you to those of you who replied with kind, constructive comments and suggestions. For those of you without kind, constructive comments, I know I will need larger tanks as the fish grow. This is not their permenant tank. I will be purchasing much larger tanks once I buy my first house. Thanks
