That is so rad. After seeing this I did the same thing. I loved the way it looked, but when the leaves broke down it was a PITA to always clean the intake of my HOBs. In a 5 gallon tank I would then add a tablespoon, maybe 2, of extract, let it circulate and then check your pH. Go that route until you find what amount of extract gets your parameters to the desired level. I wouldn't add too much at once in that small a tank! Your pH might drop off the charts...
