Ok Guys RIDDLE ME THIS????? Why are my oscars growing faster thatn my pbass? I feed them at the same time and they all eat together. Now the pbass will eat twice as many feeders as the oscars (if the oscars get any) so i supplement the oscars with ciclid pellets. The other question is, is it normal to have one out of four cichla larger than the others? and one smaller than the rest? They all eat like mad pbass (its awesome to watch them eat). I have been feeding them rosies latley because they will eat the hell out of guppies. So any help is good help THANKS!!!!

growth rate is all relative. you cant compare it between different species, its apples to oranges. and even within the species. some grow faster than others, doesnt mean youre doing anything wrong.

kinda like with people. remember in school how some kids were much taller than others? same applies to the rest of nature

^^^ Good answer bro..

also what size tank are they in?

Doesn't the fact that the pbass are eating feeders (low in nutrients) vs. the oscars eating pellets, which I always thought was more nutritional, play a part in the growth rate?

Feeders aren't low in nutrients. The gripe most people have with them stems from the poor conditions they are often kept in. They harbor and breed potentially fatal diseases that wreak havoc on fish. IMO, healthy feeder fish are about as complete a diet as you can supply fish with.

Just curious...what temps are you keeping for cichla at? I've got all my guys at 86-88* and have noticed incredible growth.

Im between 84-88... Depending on the outside temp. These guys are in a 60 gal for now. I still need to purchase my FX5 and they are being transferred into a 220. 7x2x2. And i will keep them there for a few years until i need to go to a 4-500... Then it will be on... Im feeding them plenty of fairly nice feeders from pets mart ( i know i know, but they are actually very clean). I am going to buy a 20 gal with filter and then buy 500 guppies for 28.00 and start my own feeder tank. Im trying to feed them daily right now to see if i see a difference. let me know what you think???

It was stated very well by Jcardonia. It all depends on a number of requirement's. Soon they will all catch and outgrow the Oscar trust me. I have an Orino that eat's everything thrown in the tank and I do mean everything ALL Pellet's and All frozen and of course feeders. He literaly eat's everything. He loves massivor! He is growing at the same pace as the other two cichla in the same tank who are just starting to eat anything other then just feeders. There bigger then him but just becasue he eat's pellet's and what not doesn't mean he is anymore healthier then them. Just a little smarter.
