I recently rescued this 7" cichla from a very poorly maintained tank in a small LFS. Its suffering from a terrible case of HITH which I attributed to the poor water conditions. Initially I thought it was an ocellaris, but I'm not completely sure now. Its bars seem to come and go and it has some yellow spangling similar to what I've generally seen in orinos. Maybe a hybrid? Also, I've read an incredible amount of varying information on the causes of and treatment of HITH. Some sites say water, others nutrition, and others still parasites. Any recommendations on the best course of treatment for this guy and any hope of him recovering well? He's with a few monos close to his size right now at 82 degrees getting gut-loaded comets to eat. Thanks all.

Clean water, less food and clean water would clear the HITH right up. A various of foods and clean water will help as well. Nice looking Ocell once you heal him up. You got the right idea by using salt.

How long do you think it will take HITH to clear up? from my experience it's a tough one to beat. im glad to hear it can be cured as you described.

IMO and IME, A couple months. Maintaining a clean tank and proper maintenance it can heal with in a month, month and a half. Frequent water changes, salt, warm temps (83-89 degrees) and a GOOD diet is all it takes.

Thats a pretty nasty HITH. As haynchinook334 emphasize so much on, clean water is the main cure of HITH
