my bass has a small injury near the eye. i think it happened because he wanted for some reason to swallow a 2,5x bigger florida gar than him, he went near his beak, opened his mouth and the gar got spooked and rushed at him. apart from that, they dont show any aggression towards him. idk what i should do, maybe some medicine or salt to cure? maybe i should just watch and hope? he eats normally, swims, and doesnt display any weird behavior.

It looks like a minor injury mate. I've had little bass lose eyes at that size and grow up fine. Just keep an eye on it and stay onto of water changes. If you're worried add salt to keep any nasties away

ill observe for now. if anything starts getting worse, ill treat him properly in a quarantine tank. also, ive seen mixed opinions on the level of nitrates in the tank, whats the maximum for bass?

My adult pair bred in 40ppm so I assume they're happy with that. It comes out my tap at 20 and keeping below 40 is a weekly struggle. Low as possible especially if you're keeping them in hard water. I wouldn't want to try test out the " maximum limit" or toe the line with it. Just keep it as low as you can and they will thrive

i just want to know at what level i should make a water change, i wont limit test. for now, my fish are small and the stocking isnt big so a water change every 2 weeks should do.

Without knowing your system it'd be hard to comment. I'd aim to keep nitrates under 40ppm personally
