Hello Cichla fans,

I'm new here and already have a little problem.

Since one week I'm the owner of a wonderfull Cichla Monoculus. In that week he didn't grab a bite. He's in with Crenicichla, Myleus rubripinnis and Sorubim Lima. No signs of stress and he is not thin, waterparameters are OK,...

I feed them Mussels and fish (frozen), the same as the previous owner. He doesn't even look at it.

What can I do to make him eat? Maybe you guy's can help .

Greetings,
Nico

Sometimes when you move a cichlid, especially the ones that tend to get big, they pout for awhile. This may be what you're experiencing.

I wouldn't have posted such a trivial response but when I'm worried about my fish, I'm looking for a response quickly.

Yup let him get used to the tank. Or you can throw some live minnows in there and I would bet he would eat ;) .

Other than that you should also test your water chemistry, make sure your tank is properly aerated and heated.

If you cover all those bases then he is just stubborn

How big is the cichla?

Thanks everyone for your replies,

He's about 12"

This morning I fed my Myleus some live flour maggots as a treat (once a week). He responded immediately and took a few of them. Maybe he's used to eat live food, so I will get some live minnows this afternoon.

Some more info:

Ph = 6,8
Kh = 3
nitrate = 0
temp = 29°C or 84,2°F
Waterchanges 2 times a week +- 20%
tank capacity 1000 l - about 260 US gallons
Filter 3000l / hour

Greetings,
Nico

At that size he can last quite a while without food.

Don't worry too much just yet.

dooooooont think of starving him, like peocockbass once said , "cichla are not dogs",

keep beefing him up on minnows, use Dmacks tecnique on converting cichla off live food, its a sticky in this forum
