I've been wondering about this for quite some time now and haven't found the answer. How do cichla develop red eyes? Is it hereditary? My orinos are starting to have a tinge of red in their eyes.

Yes, certain species have red eyes. Orinos, ocells, kelberi and some temensis are the most common cichla to have this characteristic.

More like certain specimens of the above species..some subjects wont have it and its mostly based on the mood of the fish...it is most common to occels, wild ones. When one thinks of red eyes, it means mainly occels

Legend has it that all red eye cichla are called bob marley cichla. No but seriously the red eye thing is weird. I had 4 Guyana ocells from when they were 4" and all 4 had nice red eyes. I gave one to my friend and I kept 3. My 3 had red eyes 24/7. The one that my friend has lost it's red eyes a few weeks after being in his tank and always has black eyes. So in my opinion I think some species carry the red eye trait more than others but when they display it could be due to mood and surroundings.
