While I was watching my Cichlasoma dimerus F1s spawning today, the words of a song came to mind:
"Darling, down and down I go round and round I go
In a spin, I'm loving the spin I'm in
I'm under that old black magic called love".
The parents of these fish were caught by Ray Quennelle, a local aquarist, in an unnamed creek in the north of Uruguay, near Bella Union, a town on the Rio Uruguay. The 'dimerus' are spawning on the side glass. They have done this in the past when there was no other surface available. But this time they've passed up their usual spot... the piece of square slate in the back corner. It has been said that 'variety is the spice of life'. I suppose it's true...even for a fish.
