not sure about that, I'm not a Tetra guy....only ever had a few blacks and whites as a kid, but I don't see why not as long as there are enough dithers overall to keep the TBs from targeting the others. I was always told TBs are nippers, but I don't have any issues with them. They don't even bother the longfin leopard danios

Rosaline sharks are a very attractive dither if you don't mind putting out a little extra $$, probably hardier than a lot f the others but I also am a fan of Rainbows and Giant Danios
And the Rainbow/Denison Barbs are my favorite. $10 each dithers add up after awhile haha

Good GOD!!! You pay $10 each for Australian Rainbowfish? Jeez, you might be better off just going with the Rosalines for that price. I think paid $1 each when I had them a few years ago

I meant Rosaline not Rainbow lol. The Rosaline are $10 BAT and TB are around $2 to $4 and Australian Rainbows are under $2 and some other rainbows closer to $10

you can generally work out better prices on "bulk-buys" with a lot of the Ma-and-Pa LFSs....I always do, but they also buy fish and reptiles from me too :) 2-way street

No ma and pa stores here anymore. Petsmart Petco Pet Supplies Plus. And the best of all is That Fish Place. A new one just opened up a few miles away, Exotic fish and Pets I believe. Haven't had a chance to visit yet but I heard it's really nice

I realize by your initial choices, that being geographically correct is not important in your tank. But if you were to choose dithers that come from the area all 3 of your cichlids come from, they would either be live bearers like Gambusia, or Poecilia, or tetras like Astyanax.
Astyanax tend to be very nippy, so in a small tank like the ones you describe, they would be far too aggressive, but some of the larger swordtails or sailfin mollies would work well, and would probably stay near the surface away from the cichlids, providing movement in that area, and the constant dropping of their fry would provide plenty of extra snacks for the cichlids.

Astyanax are very nippy. Some get over 6" and can take nice size chunks out of the most aggressive cichlids. Exos probably are no where near as tough as some astyanax sp.
You can see my salvini' tail has a nice bite out her tail.

Sorry took awhile to reply. That's a nice Salvini. Does it allow dithers at all? And what other tankmates?

I just got done losing 38 tiger barbs in 2 days to a very nasty RTM. She didn't even eat her kills just killed them to kill them. I rehomed her, and the two remaining tiger barbs I have are doing just fine. The next time around I'm only gonna add a few at a time and see which dithers my fish tolerate. Seems different fish tolerate different dithers.

Holy crap sorry to hear. I've been working in filtration with the tank before I add fish. So still deciding on dithers yet. And as I'm typing this my JD and FM are having a little showdown

Thanks she is in a 150g w/ a large syn, robertsoni, rostratus, nic, HRP, firemouth, 2 t. Macs, t. Passiones, and 5 two spot astyanax. She is pretty mellow, but I have never really found salvinis to be as aggressive as people make them out to be. This is my 5th one too. Maybe it's tank size or lack of breeding? Not sure, but mine gets bullied by almost every other fish.
