Out of curiosity, assuming a bunch of cichlid eggs are fertilized, can they do fine in a tank by themselves and nothing else (not even parents)? And what about when (if) they hatch into fries? Would the fries live, assuming they get fed?
Eggs have to be "fanned". After the eggs are fertilized the parents take turns hovering over the batch of eggs and "fanning" them. I believe the purpose of this is to keep the eggs from stagnating and keep any micro-organisms from attacking the eggs. If you could find a way to simulate this, i would think it's possible.
My dempseys usual lay their eggs on a flat stone or clay pot. When I'm sure the eggs have been properly fertilized, I remove the stone or pot with the eggs attached and put them in a small tank with water from the parents tank and a small sponge filter. Then I position an airstone under the eggs on a very low setting to replicate the fanning the parents would do. Works for me!

Hm, well my female convict laid eggs on a slab and they seem to be fertilized (looks tannish/brown but well so is the slab lol). Just that this is the third batch and normally I don't think the eggs were fertilized the last two times. The female is super aggressive this time, chasing everything including the possible dad so thought I might need to do something lol.
But well possible dad isn't chased anymore and well I guess I can try simulating fanning but probably easier now that they've all calm down to just let it be. XD
