That's freaky...You have the same exact species as I do in the same tank...
I have a bit more but those are my mains..

I lost many fishes from bloat caused by floating pellets.
Well, I don't think it's from the pellets. Maybe because I over feed them sometimes...

I feed them strictly sinking now. And only what they can eat within a certain pd of time.

They are all algae eaters, rock dwellers so a diet based on spirulina is necessary.
If pellets cause malawi bloat, i dont think so.

Food from OSI is from good quality and when you got the spirulina pellets from osi it provides very well for your algae eaters.
The are a lot of brands here in europe, but i dont now if yu can get them in the us.

You can varied with flake food (color and energy), frozen food is also a option ones a week.

A Bloat attack will mostly come when the fish do NOT offered varied food,an a bad water quality.
It is a bacterial infection in the intestine of the fish.

Most causes of bloat is not food. It is stress from poor water or harassment. I however do not offer floating food. Fish can come up to get the floating food suck in air giving themselves float. Many say offering a varied diet is best for your fish, but if you are feeding a quality pellet then you do not need to offer other foods. The pellets have a variety of food already in them and is balanced for the fish. If I offer other foods I do it for my fun. To watch them eat something different. I have fed a varied diet in the past and have found no difference in my fish since ending this.

Your right mike, stress is also a factor when you get bloat, i forgot to say that.

But i think that food is not something to underestimate, especially with Mbuna's, in the wild they got also a lot of different things to eat.
If they will survive with one sort of pellet, sure they do.
But we like to take care for our fish the best way as possible, and i think that you will be not happy when you get every day the same food over and over again.

about floating food, cichlids in the wild also hunt on mosquito's above the water, and there quite able to push the air out of them through there gills, with frontosa's it's a other thing, they can hold air.
But i never saw or heard that with our malawi friends.

so, bloat is a combination of stress, food supply and water condition.

Go with NLS the sinking type made for African cichlids. A little goes a long way. Also dont' feed at least one day a week. Keep up on weekly water changes and montly filter and gravel vacs. Should see vast improvement.

Ohhhh, I see....
I guess my OB got bloat from stress.....
I got it right after I moved it to my community tank...

But still, I don't trust floating pellets...
And yeah, x2 with NLS sinking pellets for your african cichlids.

be super careful with hikari's cichlid bio gold, it has like 50%+ protein levels and overfeeding it will definitely cause bloat in mbunas and even sometimes peacocks and haps.

NLS is still pretty high like 40-45% protein so once a day feedings or even every other day feedings should be fine.

The fact of the matter is that anything with a high protein content needs to be fed sparingly, and foods that are full of protein and also fatty like market shrimp are like a once a week only treat type basis.

hope that helps
