What would be a decent cichlid pellet for a jack dempsey. Ive read mixed reviews about Hikari Sinking Carnivore and Hikari Gold. Some say theyre quality fish foods and some say theyre full of fillers after the first couple ingredients. Ive been feeding my dempsey Marineland Tropical Flakes since i got him 4 months ago. He has grown about an inch and i was wondering if i should just continue feeding him this or if there are better options out there.

Personally think nls or northfin are about the two best foods out there.

This topic has been tossed about over and over, I think right now you’ll be hard pressed to find a better fish food then NLS. (New Life Spectrum)

New Life Spectrum is a good brand but would personally still feed the Hikari Gold .

I reviewed Bug Bites in the following past discussion.

As far as feeding a JD, there are plenty of foods currently on the market that will get the job done, but if I was to personally recommend a few of the better formulas based on my own experience it would be NLS Cichlid, NLS Ultra Red, and NLS AlgaeMax. Feed sparingly, keep your water quality pristine, and enjoy your fish.

I have two things to say.
1) Long time ago in a galaxy far away I was feeding a couple of different Hikari products. Not my first choice, even at the time, but couldn't get my preferred food locally. Then I ordered some big, beautiful C. mloto online and after six months in my tank I noticed they they looked dull compared to when I first got them, my other fish did also when I thought about it, but it was most apparent on these mloto. I wondered if it could be the food, which led me down the road of doing some serious long term food testing and getting interested in the subject of fish nutrition, which led to... lets just say I haven't used HIkari in years... but that's just me.

2) Did a quick check and I still see soybean meal on Cichlid Gold's list of ingredients. Most forms of soy, especially soybean meal, are on my black list as a result of reading about multiple fish nutrition studies such as this one: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/12/081205095954.htm

Personally I use omega one. I believe nls is better, however the price vs availability vs quality is a good compromise to me for the fish i have.

Compare the ingredients for nls, omega, etc then get the one that you think has the best ingredients.
