Looking for a mated pair of cichlids for a 3ft 50G(36Lx15Wx21H). I'm having a brain fog on what to stock as there are so many good choices. What would some of you all suggest? Not interested in apistos, rams, angels, etc. Would prefer an uncommon species that I could try my hand at breeding.

Any ideas?

First thing that came to mind were jewel cichlids. Not necessarily rare I suppose, I can't find any near me, but good looking fish nonetheless.

Someone elsewhere had suggested Salvini....Im on the fence about that one. Id love to own Sals again but not sure if 3ft is enough for a pair. Thoughts?

I also love the suggestion for the Cryptoheros species. How about some Chetumalensis?

Someone else had also suggested Rainbow cichlids....again not super uncommon but not really that common these days.

I would honestly buy s short body Texas and a bonsai Flowerhorn for that tank. They will not outgrow it. They won't get that big anyways

The second pic is a super red Texas. Very rare.

The short bodies are not hybrids of the Texas species. Everything else is a hybrid. Good luck

What about single fish for the tank? Id like a Red Texas but Id want one which wasn't a short body....I just cant get on board with the whole short body/bonsai thing.

I love bonsai and short body they're my favorite actually but to each their own. This is my female super red Texas she's hitting 10" now. I think your tank would be very small for one. If you had my fish she can swim two feet and come back which is not much space at all.
