My husband and I have an empty 50 gallon tank we've been trying to decide what to do with. A store near us has these guys for "adoption" (though you pay for them but it's cheap)...they are 8 african cichlids (according to the salesperson) that were turned in by the owner. The biggest one is about 4ish inches, which is the big blue guy. We would love to put them in our 50 gallon tank, but have a few questions. Here they are all together.

1) what types of cichlids are they?
2) are they compatible together?
3) will a 50 gallon house them for the rest of their lives?
4) we have no real experience with any more challenging types of fish, I hear people say cichlids are "easy" but is it a good idea to take them on?
5) I hear you should overstock a cichlid tank to keep aggression down..would this be the right amount of fish for a 50 gallon tank, or would we need more?

Many of the fish from petco ect are hybrids/low grade and those look to be mostly Kenyi cichlids..you can google Kenyi cichlid to see the resemblance. A few appear to be some type of "afra" cichlid but they'll all do fine together. A 50 gallon is fine. They are among the easiest of fish to care for, just about anyone can do it. Aggression shouldn't be an issue with those eight in a 50, just be careful ifmadding any new, smaller fish later on.
