Today I come home from work go downstairs to feed my cichlids and I noticed one of them not eating but very healthy and lately very territorial. He/she looks like she's eating something all the time. constantly looking like she's chewing on something. So I looked closely and noticed she was with holding eggs in her mouth! Now what? Never been in this situation before! I don't know how long she's had them? I have a 75 gallon bowfront with 12 cichlids. A community tank if you will. And a 29 gallon custom sump I built, with a DIY overflow. Right now the tank just has 2 pieces of driftwood in it and pool filter sand substrate. Please help!

Do you want to save fry?

Do you have a separate cycled hospital tank? If you don't there isn't much chance of saving fry unless you have an egg tumbler.

you have a sump filter. what kind of bio material you use in there? You should be able to buy a cheapo in-tank or HOB filter and fill the body of it with some of the bio material (bio balls, ceramic rings, etc.) and that will work just fine. Just make sure to put some filter mesh/floss (I use batting from a fabric store) over the intake of the filter or it'll suck in fry.

How long has the female been holding? After 16-20 days, you should be able to strip the female and raise the fry from there. I'd also look into setting up a small brine shrimp hatchery. Very easy, look at youtube.

What kind of fish btw?

I have matrix rock, and those ceramic rings fluval makes. Along with ammonia and carbon. I also have allot of hob filters. But I prefer not to remove the sump from the fish tank. I think she's been holding for at least a week. Not exactly sure.

Do you have a space in your sump you could put her in? IMO I think the fry will get sucked up and die, but you could always try.
