its a slate tile bottom...

I did think maybe texas hybrid, who knows. hopefully duanes will chime in, if he doesn't recognise it then its surely a hybrid!-)

its been in the tank about 30min, its a nice matte grey with iridescent fins when relaxed. what made me wonder is it was traded in with some very nice red shoulder severums, makes me think who ever had it may have other rare cichlids...
also texas hybrids normally keep the pearls no?

also the black markings are surrounded by blue which is an amphilophus traite?

It's some type of Amphilophus. Looks like a low grade Floerhorn. If I had to guess...something with Trimac. Astaheros macracanthus has a distinctive black blotch visible in normal coloration on the back (below the V-VI dorsal spine) crossed by the upper lateral line. That it's not. Macracanthus is another one of those fish that are just not in the general hobby.

Not limited to amphs. Salvini is one example.

The fish sure does look like a. macracanthus, but they are so rare. If it is, you scored big time. What did you buy him as?
The problem w/ identifying hybrids is that everyone assumes a hybrid will exhibit the exact traits by the parents, and it's easy to nail down what they are. Truth is, sometimes hybrids look like something completely different.

he wasn't labelled, the store either wasn't told or forgot... tried to sell it to me double what I paid a few weeks back as an argentea lol....

it has a red outline on the dorsal and tail which isn't very apparent in the pics.

Lol this LFS seems to have no clue what they are selling. How do they price fish or it sounds like things are somewhat negociable lol.
Anyway, it's hard to tell what it is or has in it, but I would say most likely a flowerhorn.

Some LFS are absolutely clueless in knowledge of fish. I was in one a few days ago and I heard a customer ask if an Oscar was a SA fish. The LFS employee said, "I don't know" lol.

I've been keeping fish for over 10 years now and I still don't know. I just know American Cichlids and the care stops there. For all my Cichlids. So I dont blame him.
I guess we are different kinds of people around here.

But the fish looks like Herichthys x Ampholophus
