Recently I brought this Cichlid Home: http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/Sanguvixen/IMG_20120423_222520.jpg

It has what appears to be a cream base (light yellow), bluish-charcoal and black spotting, a very metallic blue head. It was sold as Peacock and I'd like to verify that this is actually the case. This guy is in a 75 gallon tank, and I am curious...is it okay to keep this guy alone? Meaning with no other cichlids in the tank? I'd not like to have to get another if I do not have to but...if having a second cichlid is necessary (same species possibly a female if I can find one) I am open to the idea.

*Current stock in tank other than this fish are 2 Senegal Bichirs, 1 shy lazy Ornate, 4 boisterous active Yoyo Loach, and a single African Butterfly Fish (he never leaves the top of the tank). All fish co-exist rather peacefully although every once in a while the loaches try to fence with the Cichlid like they do with each other. The Cichlid is never too enthusiastic about playing their games.

You can definitely keep cichlids alone? It's when you have multiple ones is when you can get really aggressive. The only thing I would say is that if you keep him alone for a long time don't add other fish because he will be the dominant male for really long and then another fish is added and he will not like the idea of that at all!! He looks like a blueberry peacock, but if you say he has deep blue on him he could be a blueberry ob ahli. These have a blue tinge through the body blue spots like he does and the ob'ish coloring of an ob. This would also explain his stout pointed white dorsal fin. Looks like an ahli's almost. Good luck :P

Well if that is the case I will keep him alone. I have no desire to add any further fish really. Everything I found of these fish though talked about groups. I couldn't find anything talking about keeping them alone. This one is sort of a compromise to keep family happy. They wanted a bright/colorful fish. So after looking around I settled with this one.

I mean you could always have a little community tank with a couple other fish. I mean think of it this way. If you were a fish would you like to be alone for your whole life? Or would you like to have at least a couple other people to interact with?

Well he's not exactly "Alone". There are other fish in the tank, which I listed in my first post. I've heard two things said about these guys...on one hand you could get them a female of the same species as a tank mate...and they will be fine? Then on the other hand I'm told it could provoke aggression and that's it's best to keep them alone. And this guy does have some interaction with the Loaches who seem for the time being to think he's just part of their school.
