Sorry about the bad pic and dirty glass, but can someone identify this fish? My mom "rescued" it for me and was told it was a bumblebee cichlid but after looking them up it seems way too large and wide? Probably at least 8"-9"!

The pound for pound meanest fish in the world: Tilapia buttikoferi. When he turns 8", he turns into a murderous psychopath. He may not be a rescue in the end. You will need rescue when he reaches that mark. Best kept with fish of similar size and temperament like Jags, the midevils or in species tanks. They grow large up to 16" and thick. So you will need a big tank to house at least one. They are not picky eaters and will eat almost anything. Will even nibble on some plant matter. They have a lot of personality and very personable, though. They make excellent wet pets. I love them if not for their bullying and face-biting behaviour.

Woah! Thanks folks! Much appreciated! Now it makes more sense why the guy who had him decided to toss it in a snow bank! Still glad my mom saved it though. Would he be okay with JD's about the same size....for now?

What?! Who would do such a thing? Meh! I would be frustrated, too, if I see this fish too bullying other fish for no reason at all. Throwing him into a snow bank is too much though slamming into a wall would also work for me (no, I thought of it but never did that!). Is he the bully or is he being bullied? How big is he? He can easily grow more than inch per month on a good diet and a large tank with a lot of water changes. Mine averaged 1.5" per month so I had to return him to the LFS after 7 weeks. You can judge how long you can keep him but I'd say, you'd come home to a dead JD after a few weeks as he will certainly grow a lot faster. Make plans for either a divider (not recommended) or a new tank now.

ive kept one since it was an inch long in a cichlid community, its now around 9inch ive had no problems... ive always kept it with aggressive fish though and he started in a 180g, now they all reside in a 300g so that might be part of the reason. my mate has a sibling of my butti in a 85g with jewels and its noticably more aggressive but still not nearly as murderous as a red devil. imo red devils are by far the most evil cichlid but thats a different thread all together... good luck with the fish mate, find the dude who threw him in a snow bank and tie him up strip him off and throw him in one!-)
