Picked a pair of these up at PetsMart - no ID tag or UPC so they sold them as something else just to make the sale. My cichlid knowledge is very thin - what are they?

Also, the pH is 7.5... do I need to buff it or will that work?

What were they called "to make the sale" ??

That is an Aulonocara sp. and PetsMart DOES carry them regularly.

Fish on the bottom is a Polypterus.
 
The tag had gotten wet and fallen off so they just scanned a blue fish nearby and said they thought the price was about the same.

If I walked into an lfs and got told that or there was no one in that store that could be informative as to what you were buying I would have quietly turned around,hopped back in my car and shopped elsewhere.
I will not shop at any stores reguardless of price if it is not run by people who are enthusiests themselves and have a broad array of information to offer.
 
Yes, that is definitely an Aulonocara sp. or "peacock". They are bred and cross bred in many instances to the point where there are many designer strains and color variations.

I have a strain of Peach Peacocks that are a beautiful butterscotch color with blue faces and highlights in the fins. The reason I bring this up is because, when breeding the peach males to peach females, they occasionally throw a fish or two that look like that. It just goes to show the variation in their line. Some of my most stunning peacocks have been variants in color strains. I have one now that was from (I believe) a peach male to an OB female and he has a gorgeous sunset orange body on a brownish gray background with a blue head.

Peacocks are a lot of fun.
 
you knopw whats funny i don't know anything about africans but i thought peacock!

probabaly cause thatsone of the like 5 names i know!! lol
