I have an extra 40 gallon that i was thinking about getting some puffers in, but im thinking about a single or a pair of cichlids that could work. Its a Hex, i dont know the measurements but i could get them. Brightly colored with great personality is what i am getting at which is why i was thinking puffers. Any ideas?

Hex tanks are gonna be tough. At first I thought maybe a pair of salvini or firemouth but they both still hit about 6-7" for a big male. Could do some rainbow cichlids, or some dwarf cichlids of some type. That's a tough one. Couple angel fish could look cool. I don't know man....

Those freshwater dwarf puffers actually are not a bad idea, so long as you understand it will have to be a species only tank. They will about nip anything else to death, reallly.

Otherwise, I agree with batboi3000... your looking at some smaller, but still very cool cichlids, like rainbow cichlids, apistos, rams, or maybe some of the African shellies like multies or occies, etc.

If you want a fish that will appear to be larger than they really are I would go with Angels because they have a low bioload, They don't swim very fast so you don't need a lot of tank length, and you can possibly keep 4 angels in that tank.

+1 on the Angels, not too messy not too big, and you could keep a couple dwarf cichlids with them like rams, that would be cool...

thanks for the input. i like the idea of puffers but the angels and dwarf cichlids sound cool... so many choices!
