I’m just in the thinking phase for now , but what would be a cool New World cichlid pair for a 75. Must prefer hard water with sand and rocks (the tank is set up forr rifties and I like the setup how it is) and nothing too small. I prefer something in the 6-8” range.
no convicts, hrps or rainbow cichlids. Something that looks after there young is a bonus but not required.
Thanks for any ideas

PS - the tank is currently empty and if I do this , there will be no tank mates, just a pair of whatever

I am in Australia so probably no where you could get any from, there are a lot of salvinis around here at the moment but not in pairs.
You could try the classic get 6 and wait for a pair method but they are very aggresive so the unpaired fish would probably get shredded.
I have kept them and they were by far the most aggressive fish i have had, they are very nice to look at and interesting to watch but mine killed everything i tried to keep with them except columbian tetras. Eventually i tried to take them back to the LFS as they were in a 4x2x2 tank and i wanted more fish. I left them in a bucket for 1/2 an hour and when i came back the dominant salvini had even killed the other one.
They are cool but i think you really need to want them as if you buy some its probably all you will be able to keep in your tank.

I would not trust salvini in a 75
Hypsophrys is cool as a pair fish
As are:
Archocentrus
Anything in rocio
Anything in thorichthys
Anything in australoheros
Anything in cichlasoma
Anything in andinoacara

Honestly, this tank was a hap/peacock tank and for the first time in my 37 years of keeping fish, I had a catastrophe and lost more than half of them. So I sold the rest and I’m leaning heavily towards doing an mbuna tank now, but before I do I’m seeing if any SA/CA catch my interest, but I would only want to do a breeding pair of glass bangers, so I don’t mind the no tank mates thing. Salvini seem pretty cool, but I think I prefer what’s in my mbuna cart still lol

Thanks, do you know any sites that sell breeding pairs? I prefer not to do the by 10 and hope for a pair thing. I bought 11 callochromis a few months ago and they all turned out to be male 😡

Most places do not sell sexed pairs per se, but you're usually able to just ask for a male and a female, and contrary to what most people will say, you'll usually have luck getting a spawn out of them if you do have a male and a female. I very rarely buy my broodstock in groups. Luckily for you though, most American cichlids are easy to sex. However,
- I am not sure where to get hypsophrys now that cota is closed, most lfs should have them though, females have light blue heads and iridescent coloration while males are usually a matte yellow, sometimes with a dark blue head
-archocentrus are the exception, but Dave's rare fish carries them
- I am not sure how rocio spinosissima are sexed but I believe Dave's rare fish has those too. Normal jack dempsies are pretty easy to come across.
- thorichthys are near impossible to sex, however some in the helleri species group will have dorsal spots on the females. thorichthys in general do better in groups however, so it's less you buying 10 in hopes of keeping 2, more buying 5 because you need 5, and 2 eventually pairing off. they're not too aggressive during spawning either for the most part. if you're fine with buying groups because you need to, the genus cribroheros is also on the table.
- australoheros and cichlasoma sp can be bought from fishfarmusa@comcast.net. his stock list is available on facebook (southeast exotics and tropicals). make sure to specify that you want a pair as he often sends extras.
- andinoacara can usually be bought from tuic

By convicts, do you mean actual convicts, or just the entire amatitlania genus? Sajica makes a good pair species and hits your size preference. Myrnae does as well but either needs to be kept at room temp to ensure that the pair bond stays (they will divorce pretty quickly if spawns fail, which they will at warmer temps as eggs do not hatch at higher than 77F ime) or needs groups for potential (non mortality related) mate replacements. I don't recommend any of the cryptoheros species as a pair fish. They do better in BIG groups as well.
7" male myrnae in my dad's tank:

Sajica can also be bought from Dave's. Sometimes Aquabid (first coast tropical fish/90215). Myrnae the same. The male in the picture is actually from the latter. The one behind him is his daughter.

Maybe as Hybridfish7 Hybridfish7 suggested a colony of firemouths? They wiould be a good compromise between african and CA, a healthy group of them always look good and would fit in nicely with the existing scape. Or possibly a pair of jack dempsey, a very underated fish.
It does sound as though you would really prefer mbunas though
Im actually the considering the switch from SA/CA to some type of africans when i redo my tank soon. I dont know much about that side of the hobby but Auratus or some type of Juilidochromis have caught my eye.
