Greetings to all,

we are new to the cichlid community and have a few questions. We purchased 2 bp's from Walmart for $16 each. We are wondering why this breed is so unpopular among the cichlid fans? We built a tank for our pond fish two years ago but outgrew it this year. We now have our Koi and goldfish in a 700 gallon tank in our basement. My wife saw these blood parrots at the Walmart and thought they looked like kissing angel fish so she bought them. Now I have been researching them ever since because she was told they are community fish and non aggressive. We have found that these fish are cool to watch but are quite aggressive. There is only one other fish in with these two bp's - it's a fancy goldfish and is quite alot bigger than the two of them. They started out trying to "bully" him, but they have now learned that he is the "king" of this tank. The two cichlids are 3 inches in length, we have no idea how old they are. We are wondering what size they are when they start breeding? I know males are mostly sterile and want to start adding a few different breeds, any suggestions? The tank is 70 gallons, well filtered and clean. I also read something on this forum about bp's in an outdoor pond........is that possible since they are warm water fish?? I live in Northern British Columbia and our outdoor pond hold all of our koi/goldfish only. We have never put any other fish in there. Sorry for all these questions, I appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

They wont live outside where you live. People in Fla, SoCal and Texas may get away with it, but north of that you can only keep them outside during the summer. BP's get a bad rap for a couple of reasons. Mostly due to genetic's; while some people like the body style others hate it, they're mouths usually don't close, some poeple just hate any kind of hybrid.

Whats funny about BP is that they look like peaceful fish yet in reality they are usually very very aggressive.....do not put them with a community of gold fish because they will most likely just stress the gold fish out.....The female BP will lay eggs like its there job but most of the male BPs are usually infertile. Watch out for cross breeding if they are in a community tank.

you will find that a lot of people are just hybrid haters. theres no reason for it usually. the way i see it, if you like it, more power to you. if you dont like it, thats fine, but keep your negative opinions to yourself.

i for one, do not keep hybrids. i have in the past, but no longer. its just not for me. but hey, if you like BP/KKP, cool. i might suggest getting them from somewhere other then walmart. or if you do get them from there, make sure to treat for parasites. you never know with those fish.

you should go to parrotcichlid.com. all the people there own parrots and that site was formed for people with BPs. some people on this site have them too.

I apologize, I think I need to explain a little more clearly what we have going on. We have a large outdoor pond in which we house several gold fish and some koi. We bring these in for winter and they are all (24) currently in the big 700 gallon tank in our basement. We also have another glass tank that is about 70 gallons. This is where the cichlids are with only one of the goldfish. This is because we have too many fish for this tank and had to build the big one. We don't leave any fish outside for the winter and we didn't want to leave the glass tank empty so we put these two cichlids into it. Now, we are interested in breeding them. We are wondering what type of other fish should we add to the tank to do this?

IMO blood parrots are just unsavory and unnatural fish, but I won't impose my thoughts and views on you. I would get some convicts or green terrors or another nice south American cichlid to breed, and just enjoy your 2 blood parrots in the mean time.

Get a male texas cichlid into the mix and you'll end up with some nice fry. I'd suggest the goldfish go into the 700g or the pond. That way you can get the temp nice and toasty for the cichlids without stressing the goldie.

i posted on your other thread. just in case, convicts, texas, carpintis, flowerhorn, red devil(makes kingkong parrots), and probably severums. they are horny fish. my female lays eggs every two weeks with any male cichlid. she has also tried to breed with a female salvini:screwy:
