Me being the nice guy that I am, I'm setting up a 60 Gal. Cichlid tank for my girlfriend for her birthday. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations, cause it would be sweet to put something unique and different in the tank.

Thanks ahead of time for the advice!

I'd fill the tank with rocks and get a couple dozen African cichlids. Preferably from Lake Malawi. Smaller ones, like Zebras and other pseudotropheus breeds.

You should set up an all frontosa tank with rocks and hiding spaces.
Please note they will be ok in the 60 gal for 1.5 - 2 years, then you would have to move them to a bigger tank once they get bigger. At that time Being the nice guy that you are, you can set up a 180 gal or bigger and transfer them into it for her birthday that year! LOL! :naughty:

Go with a Flowerhorn or a Jaguar Cichlid or a few Parrot Cichlids.

I would advise you not to do the frontosa's, unless you plan on getting a bigger tank they grow 10-12inches depending on male of female and do better in big colonys which is suggested 125-180gal tank minium at full size. I would suggest a mix of African cichlids though, they are colorfull and look nice if you go with labidochromis, zebras look nice, there are alot of other african breeds that stay pretty small, I personally like Xenotilapia if you can find it.

I would say dwarf cichlids like some rams and maybe some rainbowfish. Or get her a single oscar and teach it to do tricks like jumping through a hoop. If it's for her, let her decide, don't bogart her tank.

Good call...I like the Oscar idea...she has seen my Tiger oscar and likes it very much...so maybe an Albino.

How about a planted tank, with some discus, blue rams, and a school of cardinal tetras...
