I bought a group of 10 rainbow cichlids to hopefully get a pair. Looks like I have a pair now and I want to pull the rest, there is eggs on a rock and the pair is guarding them, but anytime I get near the tank, all but one rush’s to the surface for food and I can’t tell them apart. Does anyone have any ideas how to remove the remaining cichlids without splitting the pair up by mistake?

I personally would purchase a section of Egg Crate from Home Depot and wait for the other Rainbow Cichlids to all be on opposite side and insert the divider.

You could try sitting and watching the tank, once they realize there no food it will be business as usual and then you can probably scoop out the ones you want to remove
That’s what I tried, but every time I move, they rush back

Also it’s not a huge deal if it’s their first time spawning and you lose the eggs before you can separate the other ones bc before you know they will have another batch

Oh ya I know, I might just have to wait, I would just prefer to remove the others now

You could also look at all of them closely and single out identify marks, colors, or spots to make sure you separate them correctly. No two fish are identical and there’s always a slight difference
I think I can do that, but I don’t want to risk a mistake since I’m selling off the remainder. They’re getting more protective as the day goes on, so maybe they’ll isolate themselves soon.

They’ve isolated themselves now, so separating them should be easier
