I have 9 tanks and none of them are african cichlids but my dad has a 125 gal with a group of african cichlids (malawi). He asked me to help him find some kind of fish that would grow to be a significantly bigger than the rest for that tank. I have been researching all over this site and the web and haven't found any definitive answers. It sounds like either it will pick on all the others or it will eventually eat everything in there.

If thats the case thats ok at least we know but if there is something we could put in there that would be a good fit that would be great.

Any suggestions or information would be helpful.

Thank you.

Large predatory haps like Buccochromis sp., Champsochromis sp., and Tyrannochromis sp. sound like they'd fit the bill, but depending on what's currently in the tank (size-wise) they might destroy his current stock.

His current stock ranges from 2 inches to 6 inches. Those things look great! After a quick search i found (at least the Tyrannochromis) can get up to 14 inches - is that typical in aquariums?

I don't usually check out the cichlid section at the LFS, do most carry them?

Highly doubtful, you'd most likely need to order them online. And yes, all three genera get fairly large (usually past 12") in the aquarium.

Nimbochromis species; venustus, polystigma, linni, fuscotaeniatus, and livingstonii all grow to 10"+ as adults and are interesting predatory haps as well. N. venustus and N. livingstonii are usually very easy to come by.
