Cichlid substrate Q

So I was wondering what everyone prefers for their SA/CA cichlid tanks right now I have an Oscar in a 100 gallon tank and I have a small JD in a growout tank to put in there in the future, my question is whats better a finer or coarse gravel or a lighter or darker gravel?

I like the look of fine black gravel/coarse sand, but I use a mix of medium and coarse river and filter sand in my tank.

go with any river like sand that is coarse in size and if you want to try something you can go with a Pool filter sand...or you can go with the more exotic sands like the Black Tahitian Moon Sand...=]

I got black sand in my tank wich makes the red on my oscars look really nice.
