hello today i was helping a friend setup his cichlid tank and we went to to beach to pick up some vocanic rocks and other random rocks for the decoration we'v boiled and cooked the rocks before putting in the tank. do u guys think it is safe to put rocks from the beach in to the tank?

should be fine be careful about the weight though one of my tanks cracked on the bottom last night from heavy rocks
I Have Boiled rock with vinegar and water before and I have never had a problem with using rocks found outside.
Use Vinegar instead of bleach it works well and it won't harm your fish if you don't rinse it all off.

I use this on all my aquariums it is just a good way to keep the glass on the bottom of your tank safe!
Its called Egg Crate and you can get it in just about any home depot type store near the lighting section
(It is a light [FONT=arial,sans-serif][SIZE=-1]diffuser[/SIZE][/FONT] for recessed fluorescent office lighting.)
Use it like this ...
...Before you put your substrate in!
It is easy to cut to size. I use a pair of wire cutters the squares just snap apart.
They can cost up to $27 for a 4'x2' section, but that's cheaper than replacing a $150 aquarium!

I use rocks from the delaware river...............boiling them for at least 10 minutes and have had no problems.
should be ok-like another poster said if you are going to build up rockwork use eggcrate underneath it all-
i havent used rocks from outside but my LFS has a huge cichlid tank which contains all rock from their garden centre.
Sorry about the break, i had the base of my tank crack before and i still havent used egg create, a few lfs say its bad as you can get pockets of gases which kill your fish when released. but im not sure, i kinda wish i used it, kinda dont
