Looks alone do not determine where a certain fish belongs, as far as genus goes.
In the past dentition, number of fin rays, and other factors were used to determine relationships that were thought to make a reasonable grouping.
But today, DNA research is the tool used to ascertain relationships, and evolutionary radiations.
An example would the former Tomocichla seiboldi, now being placed in another genus.
Although it very closely resembles Tomocichla tuba and T asfraci, research has placed it elsewhere.
