hey guys,
i gotta buddy who wants to get into this hobby, he wants just a 30g. i have no experience with the smaller cichlids (go big or go home) so could someone give me a list of the cichlids that dont get huge and could go in a 30g tank with no problem...for life.
he also said hed like colorful fish. any help is greatly appreciated
Eric

I own rainbow cichlids in a 30 gallon, they get along great with my senegalus.

I've kept a gold severum (6 or 7 inches TL) in a 29g for a few years with great luck. They don't move around as much and aren't the messy eaters that some are. Just let your buddy get attached to a nice fish and he'll end up upgrading anyway. He won't be able to help himself.

Lots of wood, plant,bushes.....And a breeding colony of Brichadi....Sweeeet....

If you are looking for smaller, cool, and colourful, I'd go for something like a HRP, Hondouran red point. They look kind of like Cons, don't breed quite as prolifically, and they are a crazy blue colour. Another good choice would be some Blue Acara's. The blue acaras would probably be the easier of the two to find, but both would be great fish. I've recently picked up a HRP from Tangled up in Cichlids and they are great fish for smaller tanks. Going a bit larger, still lots of colour, one could try Salvini...but it probably wouldn't be a permanent home.

Just did a quick search online for some pics so that your friend would have decent ones to view. The first of course is the blue acara, then the HRP
