I'm thinking about doing a cichlid tank in my 55. I'm wanting somewhat large fish, but ones that won't outgrow the tank. I really like oscars and Jack Dempseys, but they would probably outgrow my tank. And I want something kinda colorful (blood parrots?). Any other suggestions?

Oscars will definitrly outgrown a standard 55g, I think a dempsey would be fine though. Are you looking for a single fish or a small community?

Well... I don't want just one fish. I was thinking 3 or 4. Definitely not a commmunity though LOL

You might be able to do firemouths and convicts.

If you can get access to more rare species like any other Archocentrus stay small or even a female green terror would work with a community.

You could have some geophagus in there with some severums.

You could probably have severums with almost anything they are nice and docile (for a jumbo cichlid!), but can still hold their own. If you want you could do all severums and maybe put about 5 in there to keep the aggression down in case you got a mix of male and females.

There are a ton of possibilities, but it just depends on your resources (aka fish store supply), you money, and of course your personal preference.

if you decide to go with convicts....careful if you get a pair. If they spawn half of that 55 will be theirs.

That would be pretty cool! Convicts and blood parrots... Does anybody know where to get them for a rather inexpensive price? They're about $20 at my lfs! That's one of the only reasons I haven't tried them yet LOL
