i just read the restricted species list for the united states in the frequently asked questions section, and cichlids in general are on there for California.. it dosen't make much sense to me because in every LFS around here there is a cichlid section, is this law real? or is it just overall ignored and unenforced?

xD i guess its a stupid question, i'm just curious, it seems astounding that every fish buisness would break the same law... not that i like the laws about fish, im sure im not the only one who has lusted after a fish only to find it dissapointingly illegal

(O) Family Cichlidae - Cichlids

1. Tilapia sparrmani (Banded Tilapia) (D).

2. Tilapia zilli (Redbelly tilapia) (D), except permits may be issued to a person or agency for importation, transportation, or possession in the counties of San Bernardino, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Diego, and Imperial.

3. Tilapia aurea (Blue tilapia) (D).

4. Tilapia nilotica (Nile tilapia) (D).

not all cichlids, only the ones listed here.

Tilapia species are some of the most restricted species worldwide do to their rapid reproduction and growth rates. This is also why they are one of the most successful species for fish farming.

does that include cynotilapia species?

No. Mbuna have nothing to do with invasive species in CA and anything with the word "tilapia" in it is not considered a Tilapia. Even the Tilapia species listed are not Tilapia, they are Oreochromis.
That's a beef with taxonomy not restricted species.

When I went over the restricted species list I was very surprised that O. mossambicus is not on there considering they've established themselves in several areas in CA. The Salton Sea for example. That can't be good.

And even with the restrictions, you still see a lot of fish illegal to own or sell right here in shops.
Native gar, walking cats, nile tilapia, etc.

its funny you cleared that up for me b/c i looked at florida's ban list and it says that tilapia are both restricted and banned.....must be the different species like you said. taxonomy makes no sense sometimes
