THE GARDEN STATE
i recently purchased my first bicher and i plan on getting at least one more. i also would like to add some cichlids to my tank. can anybody give me some ideas as far as what types are recommended? ive had experience with S.A. cichlids but not africans. Are the africans cared for the same way as S.A. cichlids?

I have both of mine in a tank full of cichlids

1-10" red devil ( midas? ) 3- 7" red terrors 1- 5" green terror 1-6" jag 1-6"green sevrum my 12" goby 2-6"red devils 1-7" blue zebra 2-6" bumble bee cichlids 2 5" african clawed frogs and so on...I think I have around 30 fish in the tank

The thing you have to keep in mind is that you can keep almost any cichlid with any other cichlids as long as they have enough room. My 265 gal tank should not be able to have all these diff cichlids but they have enough room and it is so heavily populated that the agression is spread out

The red devil takes a 40gal area of the tank and digs all the rocks out of that area and will chase the other cichlids out of it's area but dosen't seem tomind the frogs or bichers or synadonis. It will also swim in other parts of the tank but it dosen't bother the other fish when it is out of it's area. It does get upset when you gravel vac and walk by the tank.

i have a 75g. with a irredescent shark about 1 1/2 inches and a senegalus about 4 to 4 1/2 iches. and a 2 inch channel cat wich will soon be seperated. what do think a good number of fish is for the size i have?

I ment to ask how big your tank is? if you have a 55gal you can't have the same type of fish as if you have a 300.

I will have my web site up this weekend and I'll have pics of diff fish that I own and If you want to keep a certain kind that I keep I'll give you the 411 on that fish.

I really like red empress and Phenochilus

I have 3 tanks that size and a lot depends on the filters you are going to use...one of the tanks has over 100 1 inch sevrums and some red empress and some fire mouths and some morri.

one has 8 3" demasioni a 6" morri 5 4" electric blues a pleco a 4" red compressicep 2 red jewls that breed and 3 4" cichlids I haven't ID yet.

one has 12- 3"red bay snooks 5-4" red empress.

as you can see you can get ( and keep healthy ) a lot of diff fish in a tank as long as you have GOOD filtration and do your water changes.

I've kept a senegal and a ropefish with my cichlids (haps, mbuna, salvini JD texas uro) with no problems, BUT I've read from others' accounts of red devils and flowerhorns and other large CA cichlids tearing bichirs apart. So sticking a bichir with known aggressive cichlids is a risk.

Mine is in with a large Texas, a large JD, and 3 smaller cichlids (Jewel, Chocolate, and Spiny) and nobody messes with him. For whatever reason everyone seems to be a bit weary of him. Mine is about 6 inches long, and has a cave that he has claimed. Very cool fish indeed...
