Tried to answer on the other post but for some reason it was locked.
First of all when people talk about snake heads they always think of the giant snake heads.
I am from Canada so they are still legal here. A friend of mine bought one(Giant snake head) and thru it into his 400 gallon tank (it was about a foot and a half long), this tank had heavy weight predators in it, all large, (cinta pike, red pikes, full grown silver arowanas, a large goliath fish, full grown jaguars, etc).
When he thru the snake head in the tank, everyone went nuts and every fish in there went to one side and the snake head by himself to the other side. The snake head was grabbing fish by their tails and making a mess. He finally pulled it out and gave it it's own tank or sold it (can't remember at the moment).
So the answer is "NO"!!!!!! Giant snake heads will not live with cichlids or any other type (IMO).
Now what most people don't realize is that there are other types of snakes heads which don't grow 3 feet and are not overly aggressive.I don't know the exact names but one type is very blue and I'm not sure if it.s called Bleeki or something like that. This is the smallest type only growing to about 8 inches and not overly aggressive. It's a very stunning looking fish!!!
The next type which I had a chance to get are N......, these grow to about 15 inches and are green and blue. Again a very stunning fish.
One of the issues with these fish is that in the winter they need a cool down period for two to three months with temperatures at about 62 F.
This is a big draw back if your keeping cichlids because you always have to move the snake heads(in winter),
So IMO if you want to raise these smaller snake heads you should give them their own tank and not mix them with cichlids. I love my Cichlids and decided not to try the snake heads but the smaller varietys are stuuning!!!! Some pic's of the two types I am talking about.

Just thought some people might appreciate this knowledge.
The first and third pic are the small variety and the second pic grow a little bigger.
