What cichlids have you all kept that, in general, form strong pair bonds? For example, very limited aggression once paired, male doesn't kill the female, they don't need to be seperated, or have a divider. I am interested in the larger CA's but wiil start by sharing my experiences with some of the smaller SA's (random fish knowledge if good).

Bolivian rams - I have had 4 breeding pairs over the years and once they pair up, they seem to become of one mind and body. Very little squabbling and it seems more play than real aggression.

German blue rams - I once got 6 juvies and grew them up, none of them paired over the next 10 months and I traded them in. Not sure what their deal was.

Angel fish - I got 6 juvies of these, got a pair and then returned the other 4. The pair was fine for about 6 months and seemed to flirt with the idea of breeding off and on. Then 1 day they turned on eachother, game over. They had to be seperated and wouldn't tolerate eachother even after weeks of seperation.

My freddies are a good example of that, don't need a divider, always together, male never harms the female and team up against tankmates all the time.

australoheros red ceibal. i have heard others say the opposite but my pair was very peaceful with one another and were great parents.

cons, jd's

Agreed with jd's, never bred cons though. Of the fish I've bred JD's bonded the closest it seemed (a couple different pairs), my angelfish pair were actually very good parents but that seems to be unusual, and my gold severum pair were generally enemies when not actually doing the deed.

i seen firemouth breed and they where good parents.
