can you tell the diff. between male and female fire mouth cichlids?

no pics, one of them is about twice to size and is mean as hell. the other is small and timid. and the big one puffs out its throat.

That could be two males, and the bigger one is punking the smaller. I cant say unless I see pics. My suggestion is to find some pics on google and compare them.
