I have a 90 gal. tank full of ciclids. One of my ciclids turned colors and its lower half is black. What causes this?? That one fish looked like it had a fungal infection,so I treated the entire tank for it and then did a water change. The fungas dissapeared, but the fish also changed colors. There is plenty of filtration in the tank. It has a corner overflow going into a wet/dry with media bags, and media balls, and a 1400gph pump. So the tank is always crystal clear. I was told that it might mean the fish is going to lay eggs. Is this true?? I dont know exactly what kind of ciclid it is?

1st- what kind of cichlid

2nd- these sorts of markings that fade are common with some different speices of cichlids, mainly i have seen it with wild caught parachromis, and Amphilophus. many of these will fade with age or mood, i doubt any sort of breeding. do you have any pictures?

also how long ago did you change the water and treat the water, the colors may be still faded from stressed modd, if you did it soon before you posted this.

I have kind of the same thing going on with one of my Caquetaia Spectabiles. It's whole left side is stripey with it's right side is a solid color. It's not a gradual change either, there's a line on the center of the fish where the bands dissapear. Any idea what could be causing this?

I treated the tank for 3-4 days. Then I did water change arox 50%. That was 2-3 weeks ago. I will try to get pictures tommarrow. I dont know what kind of ciclid it is. I have another one that looks like this one used to. There silver with black stripes down them with yellow at the top of there fins. It wasnt a gradual change eather. all of a sudden the one turned black from the lower black stripe down. I will post pictures tommarrow.

It could just be a breeding thing. I have a H Tamosopeonsis thats turns black on the bottom half when she wants to breed. Are the fish eating and swimming around the tank?

Yes. Other then the lower half of the fish turning black it looks healthy. In facy it keeps chasing the other fish around, ecpecially the othe fish wich is the same type. Thats why I was wonderfing if it was a breeding thing??? Also the fish looks a little larger then it used to be. The reason I wanted to know is if it is going to lay eggs. I would put the two fish in a seperate tank. I dont think the fry would last 1 hr in the community tank. I dont have much experiance with ciclids and no experiance when it comes to breeding them. I will try to post some pictures tommarow.

as per some comments above, some cichlids turn colors when they are about to breed. i am assuming they are CA and SA cichlids.
fyi texas cichlid females and some others turn half black when they are about to breed... pictures would help.

First off...welcome to the forum! I hope you get as much outta this as I have over the last several months.

I also have a 90 but with only 3 cichlids. I change water around 40% every week. You mention your tank is "Full of cichlids" How many? what are they? I am not sure what would cause such a color change but think all of your fish will look noticeably more colorful (and less stressed) with more frequent water changes. Especially if there are a bunch of them in there.

I wanna see pics too! :D

Good luck!
