Planning to move three 75 gallon tanks into a new fish room in the garage in a couple weeks. I'm leaning towards building new stands out of cinder block for the end supports, laid flat of course and spanning the center with doubled 2x4's, skinned on top with 1/2 inch ply. Anybody see a problem with this??....It's very cheap, should be very solid and since it's in my fish room no need for fancy cabinetry. Saw a build thread somewhere that a guy building a very large tank did this only he used steel I-beams to span the center, a bit overkill for my 75's I think.

Yeah, you will 100 percent be good on this one. I have seen tons of tanks on here supported in exactly that way. It is the easiest and cheapest way to make a stand on the fly. If you are worried about how it looks, just drape some fabric over the stand like a table cloth and you are good to go.

Aside from that, a cool idea I saw, if you have any of these around, is car rims in place of the cinder blocks.

Thanks guys. Yeah I thought it would be fine, but always best to ask somebody who's been there or seen it done. I figured if you can set a house on blocks, a few hundred gallons of water is a piece of cake. Might paint em black, just for fun. Since they'll be in a dedicated fish room looks are secondary...but paint is cheap, so what da hell....Car rims?! That's original!! LOL

Agreed on the drape, sheet or whatever fabric. That would be a cheap and easy way to improve the cosmetics. However, I would take a pass on the rims. Its unique, but seems a little weird!

When you build the 2x4 "beams" make sure to use plenty of fasteners so that they become "one unit". Other than that a really cheap stand.
