Citrinellum or Labiatum?

So... I got this guy yesterday... Been seing him at my LFS in a tiny tank for a couple months now... So i finally got him... The owner said its a citrinellum but i dont really know for certain... Can someone please confirm that? Also... Hes male right? Its about 20cm

According to the Cichlid Room Companion, one of the ways to distinguish it from all the other Amphilophine look a like cichlids of the Great Lakes of Nicaragua is,
"from a above", it has a more rounded lip profile than the V-shaped profile characteristic of others like A labiatus.
So to get a better idea, of ID, you would need to provide a shot taken from above, and compare its lips to a shot of a certified A labiatus also taken from above.

Pretty much can't tell between any of the peeling amphilophus species without proper documentation of heritage/catch location. Looks male to me though.

Well... At least im a little more confudent calling it him ?? im loving his personality already... Very interactive fish... He was VERY aggressive in the store... Trying to bite anyone who got close to his tank... But here he seems a lot more calm... At least for now haha

This has been the age old question for a long time. The two species have been hybridised for decades now. These days it is impossible to tell them apart just by looking at the fish, provided a specimen from a standard LFS. Juvenile hybrids can look more like citrinellus or labiatus.

Unless you know the lake / location the fish originated from or it’s ancestors originated from, and bought the fish from a reputable know supplier the fish is considered a midevil hybrid (Midas x devil).

99% of these fish in the hobby worldwide would be hybrids of the two.

FYI some “experts” also say that citrinellus and labiatus could be the same species…
