Hey everyone, I just noticed yesterday that the ammonia level out of the tap if high for perhaps 5 days now (around 1ish ppm) what should/can I do to lower this? I added PRIME-around 7 times what you should put in, and it helped a little (bottle says that you can put up to 5 times...)
Any helpful suggestions to really combat ammonia...I'm really concerned about my rays.

The water company is coming tomorrow to take samples...I took samples from 2 of my neighbors houses, and both were equally messed up!

UHHHH this SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

no need to go crazy on the prime, just a double dose for the new water should be more than sufficient to neutralize the ammonia. if you are putting in 30g of new water, add a 60g dose of prime.

I would also add ammo chips in a bag in your filter and change them every two weeks or so to help.

between this things and the natural nitrification in your tank, you should be fine to handle the 1ppm ammnia in the tap water and make it safe for your rays.

thanks 12 volt...but on my api ammonia test after prime was added-it didn't make a noticable difference-will it not show on test kits?

One of my leo rays has tiny white spots-which I believe is a sign of stress....
when I spoke with the lab today of United Water (my supplier) they said it wouldn't be until next week for results, and then they would have to decide what to do from there on-this looks like its going to be a while until they get it right...so it looks like I'm going to pick up some bags and ammo chips-and pick up a couple pales full of water from my folks house (they have well water, tested it, and it was fine) to diloute the ammonia a bit...

any other suggestions guys?

why not setup a simple carbon filter. i filter all my water just because. its really easy to do and fairly inexpensive.

http://www.thefilterguys.biz/

2-10" housings 20$ each
1-5micron sediment filter $3
1 matrix +1 filter $14
1- self piercing saddle $4

problem solved

if u dont want to use a sediment filter to save $ u could get away with it.

I was under the impression carbon does not remove AMM:popcorn:

thats what I was thinking mr pleco!

how about this guys...I have a culligan filter attached before my hose to fill my tanks...what about this filter insert:
http://www.waterfilterexperts.com/product.php?p=culligan_d-28&product=175769&category=2675

obviously it says it removes chloramine-but chloramine is a combo of chlorine and ammonia...so it should theoritically remove more of the ammonia correct?
let me know what you think guys!
thanks in advance, I really appreciate it!

u are correct. i put down the wrong filter. ammo in the water is a sign of chloramine.

the hardest part is getting the ammo out. the only way to do this properly is threw 2 carbon filters and a d/i resin. so basicly unless u do a d/i system, $135 at the filters guys, its a good system btw i have it, prime may be an easier solution. it WILL bind all of the ammo and make it safe.
