hello,

my clown knife is a bit of a fin nipper. nothing serious, but i see a little slit on the fins of its tankmates every few days but it always heals back. any way to curb this behavior?

thanks

To my knowledge there is nothing you can really do other than keep him fed and happy. My cousins 16" CK did this to his tankmates as well even though both were much larger (22 inch RTCxTSN, 3 17-20 inch pbass, and 18 inch endli). He would usually feed him excessively to keep him from being nippy and had limited success from that. If you would like, I can ask him if he did anything else if you would like.

Sounds like it's tank mates might be getting too close to it's territory. You can try rearranging the decor to set up new territory, but that just may be a temporary solution.

I'd interprete fin nipping as a behaviour were the fish nips fins for "food", CK's on the other hand are more territorial.. probably it gives its tankmates a nip to show they are not welcome.. I'd say there is a difference..

thanks guys. it started when i moved him witht he other 2 in the bigger tank. he didnt nip until then. ill rearrange the decor and hope for the best. there are only 3 decor...2 large wood and 1 large rock

Good. CK are very personal and like their space. In the confines of an aquarium, a CK will obviously increase aggression. BTW keep your CK well fed and happy and you'll see it not chasing after other fish as often.

he is around 9 inches and he gets 4-5 large silversides a day. on the weekends him and the gar get 10-15 feeders. i quarantine the feeders for a week or so just in case.

If you can I would add a few more rocks and some extra wood try making a few caves with the rocks.:)

oh. Feeder fish - try to avoid feeding feeder fish, it increases aggression and prey and predator stimulus to other fish around them...
