I'm a new CK owner. I've had my CK for about 3-4 months. He's a beautiful fish and has grown to about 8". My only complaint is that he generally spends all day hiding behind a rock. He comes out when it is time to eat and when the lights go out. Is this the norm?? Is there anything I can do to get him to be more active?

CKs are nocturnal. It's normal behavior. They only time it'll come out of hiding is when it feels big enough not to fear anything.
You might try adding some hiding places that are more visually revealing. I found that once I planted my tank and added lots of driftwood my Knives became much more social.
I've also heard that since Knives have poor vision, you can throw a clear acrylic tube in the tank and they will hide in there without realizing they're visually exposed.

That is interesting, my ck appears to be blind as a bat. I'm feeding him pellets and he will grab them as they float by his face, but once they hit the ground it takes him forever to find them. They could be right in front of his face, but he wont' realize it until his mouth runs over the pellet.
They are ambush predators and will usually attack food that's right in front of it's face. If it happens to run across something edible, then it'll eat it.
