I have a 300g+/- outdoor pond. I cleaned it out really good today and we have 4koi, 3pond comets and 3 bream out there. 2 comets and the 3 bream will be caught and feed to my wife's Rhom. I keep the pond pretty clean year round. I use a home-made 5g bucket filter that runs 550gph and lots of water hyacith/ water lettuce to keep it filtered. My question/problem is that there is very little shade in the afternoon leaving the pond 95* sometimes. I use 4-5 1g frozen bottles to keep it cool. Last year we kept koi, comets, bream, plecos, and a botia modesta without problems. I want to put the pleco out there again along with a few clown loaches and my peacock eel. The reason why is last year the loach and pleco grew so much faster so i want to grow out my CLs and the Eel. I've read up on both species and all i can find it recommended aquarium temperature but I know alot of people on MFK could give me better info. I plan to let the water hyacith cover most of the surface to shade the pond. Will the Clown loaches and peacock eel survive the summer?

i am not too sure if they will survive, i am not too familiar with clown loaches or the weather in Tennessee. But If you are looking for shade, can't you go and buy a fold away marquee of some? I am in plans building an external above grond pond myself, and because I am in a rental and don;t have the luxury of installing a permanent shade structure (or legally having hyacith) I am going to go the ways of a fold away marquee that can be easily removed if needed.

I would guess that the large temperature variations would kill the loaches. Although it is warm, it would probably be too cool when it's raining, etc.

im doing this in the spring. Water temp wont change too fast in the warmer months. im just worried about the high temperatures. as long as they can stand a few weeks on 95* water temp, they'll do fine. The weather in this area get really hot for a few weeks, then cools down a few degrees, then gets really hot again, then cools again. The water temp only stays mid 90s for a few weeks at a time. not like its 95* for months at a time. As far as buying a structure, anything not perminant will be blown away. the eastern winds are pretty strong. Blew hard enough to bend the frame on our glass top patio table enough to shatter the glass.

That's my concern as well, they don't thrive in conditions where temperature drops could occur rapidly. Do a temperature survey of the pond before you put the fish in.
