When they get big enough males will have white pimples like things on their forehead. Well I think.

The best way that I have heard is by their body shape. The females tend to have a much taller body, while the males look longer. It's hard to tell until they are around 5" or so.

Here's an example of my largest female....

Ok..and the example of your largest male!! :irked::D

from what ive read if you get a shoal that are approximately the same size and let them be the leader is almost always a matriarch (female boss) and you have at least one female. she will grow bigger much faster than the rest until she is noticeably bigger then growth slows again.
how much truth is in this i have no idea, im sure Ewurm will chime in and settle this.

The most reliable way is to anethetise and a massage to check. Males will readily express milt with a gentle firm strip. Watch an online video about stripping goldfish or salmon if you are unnsure.

Those not expressing milt are either immature males or females and can be further verified with canulation (narrow catheter tube) which is more difficult but still pretty easy.

Females have a taller/deeper body shape and are less colorful as they grow. Males are longer in shape and not as curved at the top. They may need to grow more before you can tell the sex of your cl's.
