Clam with Tiger Oscar?

My tank needs a little extra filtering because my Oscar is so messy. I have a great filter for the tank, i think its built for a 60 gallon and i only have a 48.\

I was thinking a clam because my oscar eats anything that e comes into contact with, but, he couldnt eat the clam, or would spit it out.

would getting the clam be a good idea or just a waste of money?

Oscars I have kept have been pretty smart. If he eats everything, he may find a way to get the clam. I've never seen a clam in a freshwater tank before, but maybe you could just add another HOB filter?

I don't keep oscars or plecos anymore- they are **** machines.

My understanding is that freshwater bivalves are not easy to keep, I'm not sure that keeping them for the purpose of adding extra filtration is the best way to go about keeping them.

Ah, okay. On Live Aquaria all it said was to throw it in there, it'll burrow in the substrate, eat the poop and filter harmful things.

the main reason was for getting the crap out. he craps, then its too heavy, or too far away from the filter, or too big for the filter to get in, so it just sits there and collects ammonia, figuring putting a clam will reduce the poo-factor.

Freshwater clams tend to die off under your gravel and you won't know it, which then pollutes the tank even more.

Yeah, I was reading around and saw how most people only had them for a few months, then they died. Ahhh... I think I'll be good without the clam. possibly. If I find one in my pond, hes mine. hah
