hi i need some help with my discus.. i have one that fins is clamped and didn't eat.. i don't know the reason why, but the couple of weeks ago, he ate really good.. anyways, before i did a 10% water change yesterday.. i forgot to turn back the heater on for about 5hrs. this is i remember before the signs of fins clamping occurs.. even though the temperature is back, he is not back from his normal diet.. his fins still clamping and didn't eat, and he stays in the corner.. what should i do with him? should i treat him alone or treat the whole tank? can anyone tell me what's going on with this guy? and what is the first step that i should do to help this guy back up to normal again? sorry for all the questions guys, i just don't wanna lost this guy.. any input will be appreciated.. thanks for reading!

It may just be that it's stressed from the temp change, some fish can handel it more than others. It could be it was getting sick and the temp change put it over the edge. It could be a sign of other things, when you said you did a 10% water change how often do a w/c and is 10% the normal amount you usually do? Did you use de-clorinator?

There is a lot more info needed to get to the cause. IMO - raise tank temp to 88 degree's, make sure there is a good Air sorce in the tank and start doing lots more water changes. In my experiance that's the best way to help them heal themselves. If it was me , thats what I would do & have done when I ad problems like this. It worked for me. Good Luck.

One of mine was acting like that about 2 weeks ago. Soon before this, I had noticed white poop. Having never seen white poop before I was alarmed, but at that time the little guy was still eating. Considering the fact that I had just moved him and his seven siblings into my 240 gallon tank from there previous 55 gallon home, I thought that maybe he was stressed or something, and decided to wait and see. 4 to 7 days later he stopped eating, I E-mailed Wetwebmedia.com and they suggested putting the fish in quarantine with Metronidazole. (I love these guys)
After the first day on the Metronidazole he was eating and after the full 4 days of treatment I was able to return him to the 240. Now, 5 days later he still seems fine.

He's obviously stressed from something. A 10% w/c isn't very much depending on your stock and size of tank. I'd test the water ASAP.........By the way, when was the last time you did a w/c and what %?

Thats a common medicin for a common sickness that discus are prone to get. Stress does bring it on! Name escapes me (maybe flukes?)

PS - SimplyDiscus is a GREAT place for info!!!!!!!!!!

Your thinking of Gill Flukes, yes they swim with one pectoral fin pinned to their side. I was thinking it was the dorsal and anal fins that were the issue. We should get clarefication on that also.

guys, thanks for the response.. really appreciated it.

for more information:

i have the guy with other siblings in a 38G tank (standard) they are juveniles still, and i have the 55G tank (standard) already in a cycle process for their new home, and i have the 110G tank (standard) standby for them when they outgrow the 55G tank..

sorry, it is not 10% of the tank changed here.. it is 25% of the water changed.. sorry for the mistakes.. i do 2x25% water change everyday (morning and evening) the reason for this, they are in a 38G tank with 15 of them.. that's why i have to do 2x everyday. i know it's kind of overcrowded, but i have the 55G ready for them and besides, they are still babies.. so, all in all, a total of 50% water changed everyday in a 38G tank where they are in..

is that enough water changed? i saw a little sign of hope earlier when i went down to the basement.. the guy kinda nibble on the glass, but the fins still clamped..

any input will be appreciated, thanks! :D

What size are these fish?
What is the tank temp kept at?
Have you tersted the tank water?
Why not treat the tank entire with Metronidazole - it cant hurt.
