Clarias Batrachus in a 55?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So I caught a walking catfish while fishing. I've always been fond of these guys, but unfortunately I am not allowed to let it go. I don't want to kill it, so could I put it in my empty (cycled) 55? I was saving it as a grow-out tank for bichirs but I would happily keep the catfish in it. Let me know if it needs a bigger tank.

The tank will eventually be too small, because the width is only 12". However, if the only alternative is getting it's head cut off... Id say it's up to your judgement which fate is better.

Hmm...Ok. A really old bichir just died in my 125, so maybe that? Idk, everything in there's pretty old and beat up. I didn't know they were active swimmers, most catfish aren't. Are the aggressive towards other fish?

125 would be better, still on the small size for a full grown adult, but IMO better than decapitation. Only way to know if it's aggressive I suppose would be to give it a shot. I would keep a close eye, and expect anything small enough (or even slightly too large) to fit in it's mouth to be eaten

If the fish came from the wild, I'd medicate it first for external and internal pathogens.

clarias batrachus are more of a scavenger than predator. Sure, if it fits in their mouths then they will eat it, but they are what I would call lazy feeders. If it comes in bits and fits in without any effort then they will eat all day, but they don't much like having to work at it and really dislike having to tear anything off, even if it's dead. Other than worrying fish during the night, it depends on your definition or scale of agressive , the size and type of other fish etc. ( sorry not much help I know)
