Hello. I caught this in a small park lake in Hanoi, Vietnam. Can anyone ID id properly? I think it's Clarias gariepinus, which is a non-native invasive species there apparently.

Eye-catching catch, so to speak! I'd suggest asking on Planet Catfish, or I can, if you will.

Should be a sharptooth catfish? So yeah garepinius, very invasive, might have been put there as a food fish

Yeah that would be cool. I can't access the email I used for PC it seems.

Almost definitely introduced as food. There were loads of tilapia too,

Thanks man. Looks like I was actually right with my ID.

Btw the locals wanted to eat the catfish and my Vietnamese friend ended up persuading me to take it home for his parents to prepare for dinner. In the end they didn't want to so we set it free in a small lake beside where we lived. My friend has told me they drained the lake to harvest the fish though.

I am pretty sure we can trust Dr. Heok Hee Ng's identification confirmation.

With that new comer, the small lake may not have much fish left to harvest next time around ;)

Nice, please thank him for his swift reply.

As far as I know, they took all the fish out, including my catch :( There were some pretty big fish in there though. I'll see if I can dig up the pics my mate posted. There were loads of big tilapia, carp and pacu. It was beside a coffee shop and there was a fish that I was sure was a red devil always splashing about near where we sat.

Sounds like it was a fun little pond to sit by and have a bite and check out the activity in the water...

Dr. Ng is the coolest guy. One of the leading ichthyologist-taxonomists in the world but down to earth and is available for consultation to us, mere mortals.

We are unbelievably lucky that Jools (Planet Catfish owner) and Dr. Ng are best of friends. Next time you are in those whereabouts, stop by Singapore and thank him yourself :)

I do plan to visit Singapore when I'm back over that side of the world :)
